Why Start Now

Why Start Now

A Poem by Frankie Nguyen

The effort I put
to try to have a relationship with you
you shoved it away
every time I tried

Why do you try now
you think I won't shove?
you think I've forgotten what you did?
Trying to tell me what to do
How to live my life
I'm not stupid like you think I am
I'm no genius like her
but, she has the one thing I always wanted
a mother

You told me
"Change this and you'll be beautiful"
"Marry him you'll have money"
"Get this job you'll have money"
"Buy a big house"
"Do this"
"Do that"
I never had a mother
You've never told me that I did great
You've never encouraged me to do anything
and now you expect a relationship?

You may be my mother in the sense of birth
but, you never played the part of mother
You weren't there for my middle school ceremony
You weren't there for awards ceremonies
You weren't there for so much
So why should you start now.

I agree with Fuel...my dad was the same way when I grew up. It was sad. I can relate to this piece very well. Good job!

I know exactly how you feel! I went through the same thing with my dad. It's a horrible thing to live without someone who should play a big role in your life. Great poem!
