Piano Man

Piano Man

A Poem by i.am.the.sun.
"

So Billy Joel's Piano Man has been stuck in my head all day. a line in it sparked this, and the main melody was in mind for writing this... which makes it pretty repetative, but it's the first thing i

"

i

knew a man

who was a lady's delight,

who had stories to tell

all day.

he'd been around since the spring

and was a congenial thing,

always

with offers

of help.

he would lend you a hand

he would help with the band

and after

he'd buy you

a drink.

then

one day

(he)-came up to me,

said "i've gotta get outta this town"

it wasn't a question

so i didn't dare ask him,

but it still makes me sad to think...

"i've made lots of friends,

but i'm not among them,

and i think

that's a mistake

that i've made.

"i'll be gone in the morning.

this isn't a warning,

just a friendly

little goodbye

is all."

a year then crept by,

four seasons, two eyes,

i had all but

nearly

forgot.

then in from the wind

came an odd little thing;

a letter with words and a seal.

"i've found a place now

where i'd rather be,

i think i'll

head there

next week."

no hint of address,

return, nor regrets,

so i figured,

he's doing,

alright.

"I've found a girl

that i'd rather see

i think that i'll

call her

sometime."

the letters kept coming

no pattern or warning,

just

little reminders

was all.

"i've found a career

that i'd rather do

i think i'll

get started

today."

i wished him the best

and i looked to the west.

maybe

he had followed

the sun.

"the night at it's crest,

is no time for rest"

was something

that he used

to say.

"but it doesn't seem right,

that to keep in the night

you must needs

only chase

the sun west."

then one lonley day

the mail came

with one lonely letter

inside.

it was addressed to me,

and was the last i would see,

of the man who

i still call

a friend.

"i've found the man

that i'd rather be,

i think that i'll

meet him

today.

my ticket is booked,

i'll be gone in the morn',

i'll see you,

tomorrow,

my friend."

i never did see him,

he never did get here,

but i like

just to think

she's okay.

and if ever i see her

i never would ask her,

just say

a little welcome

is all.

naaaa na

na na naaaa

na na...

wow.. this is incredible, very sad, but a great poetic story, and I like how you've laid it out, great job! Also, I love the transition from the guy to the girl, nice job!
