oblivion

oblivion

A Poem by hypochondrita

saw some old photos today

held them close

they keep the sadness away

when i’m reminded of what I chose

the past seems so dear

i long to return

but it’s not quite clear

whether i can discern

truth from fiction

reality from depiction

i don’t remember being satisfied before

sounds like nostalgia folklore

the future, uncertain

the present, a burden

so it’s left for the past

to set a contrast

and give me some peace

oblivion is release

I find myself slipping into this mood sometimes. I have a lot of photos laying around my house and sometimes I'm just in this mood where I sit there and want to go back to the times in those photos and not have to deal with where I am right now. Your line "I don't remember being satisfied before" is so true, and that's usually where I find myself once I start my little trip down memory lane. Our memories are not always as perfect as they might seem in a photo, but there's still something idealistic about them even when you remember all the details. I'd like to believe that has something to do with being proud of what we've come through and who we are now and all that jazz. I'm starting to ramble now, so I'll wrap it up. Overall good write, you've definitely provoked some of my thoughts.

I enjoyed reading this poem of yours. Old photos often bring similar thoughts to my mind. Reflecting on my past choices, or what memories were real, or exaggerations that I chose for them to be. Thank you for sharing this poem.
