The Last StandA Story by Liang Hsiu-ShanOn a sunny afternoon, Highsmith is in his office, smoking a cigar while looking out at the base. “Ah! It’s about time for the meeting.” The commander puts out his cigar and starts to walk towards the central command post. At the central command post, he is greeted by the higher-ups of his army. They go through one by one their issues and reports, and then suddenly, an officer busts through the door and shouts, “Commander, they’re here!! The inspectors!!” “Alright, right in time, let’s not bother the boss and just get this inspection over with. Where’s Dr Miller?” Highsmith asked. “Don’t know, Commander. We can’t find him” The soldier replied, “Well find him, we need him to lead the inspection team” Highsmith commands the soldier. Suddenly an explosion is felt, and Russian can be heard over the speakers, “S**t, they’ve taken over one of our control posts!! Men, prepare for battle!!” Highsmith shouted. Upon one of the platforms, Soviet soldiers start alighting from helicopters and getting into formation. Seeing this, Highsmith gathers his men and orders them to push the Soviets back. During the chaos, Highsmith’s men were being killed one after another, seeing this, Highsmith ordered the special branch to assist the infantry, and in desperation, he shouted over the radio “Men, this base is our home!! These people are invading it!! We must defend our home!! Grip your rifle tight!! Face the enemy!! Fight!! My soldiers!!! With the orders of Highsmith, a surge of adrenaline rushing through the men and they start retaliating against the Soviet soldiers and pushing them back, Highsmith grabs a pistol and his crutch and starts making his way to the main platform to meet up with Adamska. Meeting up with Adamska and seeing Dr Miller on the Soviet helicopter, they theorise on Dr Miller’s past but not before a nuclear blast wipes them out In the end, the world blamed the nuclear blast on greedy money hungry PMCs, the truth of what happened at that forward operation base run by Adamska’s PMC will be forgotten by history and remain buried © 2024 Liang Hsiu-ShanAuthor's Note
