We were on our way back from the Coit Tower after the whole incident.
Earlier Annie found me in a melancholic mood and coaxed me into going out with her.
She, along with her colleagues had planned a trip to Coit Tower and didn’t want me to stay alone. That is how we ended up in Coit Tower.
Annie and I have been friends for almost five years.
We shared secrets,
We shared tears,
We shared smiles,
We shared everything.
Yeah! We do have our fights and our bad days.
Sometimes we fight over which movie to go to and sometimes what to eat for dinner.
That is all our fights would be for. I would never want to risk such a beautiful friendship for anything.
Annie is a very precious friend of mine.
She has been my backbone, my support and my loyal companion all along.
The best part is her family.
Mr. John Cruise and Mrs. Jane Cruise are both crazy. Not just plain crazy, they were crazy about each other. They were so much into each other that they have eight kids already and the ninth is on the way.
Yes! Mrs. Jane Cruise is four months pregnant now.
I always thought people drift away as marriage gets older. But I am proved wrong every time I see them.
I think they can’t be more in love than now but every time they seem to be in love more and more.
The kids ?
Well….Anna has five brothers and two sisters.
Anna is the fourth one. The eldest brother and the eldest sister are married. The sister already has a kid and her sister-in-law is eight months pregnant.
Once you are in their home, it’s a completely different world.
They fight, they share, they do everything together.
There is so much love between them that it radiates to the people around them.
And I am lucky that I have been literally adopted by this family.
And that’s how Annie knows how to kick, pinch, slap, pull hair ‘til the person is completely bald.
But she has a heart of gold though she may be quite dangerous when she is angry.
And that’s what she is now, angry.
She is angry and she is driving. I told her I’d drive but she wouldn’t listen.
“Damn it Annie! What’s with you today fighting like this with them?”
“No Sarah. You don’t know anything. That guy is a pervert. We were lying on the beach the other day and this guy was taking our photographs”, she complained.
I gasped, “He never asked?”
“Oh no! He never asked and had enough guts to come closer to take them thinking we were taking a nap. I opened my eyes at the right time and he was caught. I am sure he was trying to snap something which he could never have in his lifetime unless of course through surgery”, she snickered.
I laughed.
“But then why were you fighting with his friend yesterday?”
“His friend?” her brow furrowed in thought.
“Yeah, the one you were fighting with in the airport’s parking lot, remember?” I reminded her.
There was a look of recognition on her face.
“Oh! That idiot? He called my baby a piece of junk. He was lucky he is still alive.” she gritted her teeth.
I suppressed a smile.
The guy indeed is lucky his body parts are still intact.
“But how do you know he is that pervert’s friend?” she frowned.
“Duh! You and that pervert were sprawled across the idiot fighting.” I told her.
“I was worried that he stopped breathing, but when he smiled…”, I trailed away.
He looked very familiar and I had a feeling that I had seen him somewhere…but where?
I could not place him anywhere…and, the smile…the smile when I asked him whether he was alright, it was as if, he got what he wanted and he was happy…like a child who wanted an ice-cream smiled when he got it.
“He smiled?” Annie asked.
“Yeah. Annie?”
“Huh?”
“Hmm, do you think we saw his friend somewhere?”
“Who? That pervert? Yeah, definitely somewhere on wanted posters.”
“No Annie. His friend, the idiot?” I asked, reminding her.
“Oh! The idiot? Hmm…” Annie’s brow furrowed in thought.
“No, I don’t think so. I can’t place him. Why?”
“Nah! Just seemed like a known face.” I waved it away.
A face that was etched with character, confidence , maybe a little loneliness.
It was a handsome face. He had brown hair but it appeared blond under the sun. He had beautiful eyes…eyes which seem to pierce through your soul. There was a hint of loneliness too.
He had hungry eyes, not the predatory hungry eyes rather the love me, care for me hungry eyes.
Is he really lonely or is it all my imagination?
Silence fell between us leaving us to our own thoughts.
I looked out my side window and saw everyone rushing somewhere or the other.
Everyone has somewhere to rush, as if the heavens would fall if they do not run.
My mind turned to the fall at the Coit Towers.
Now that I think of it, it was really funny seeing Annie and the other guy fighting like two kindergarten kids.
We reached home. After parking the car we went up to our floor and entered our flat. I fell onto the couch tired.
Annie followed behind me.
We both skipped lunch and it was rather late for us to have one.
I suggested coffee and she agreed happily.
We walked together into the kitchen with a goal to fill our hungry stomachs.
