Fifty years ago

A Poem by hoyt
"

This is a song i wrote for my parents fiftieth anniversary six years ago. goes better with the tune, but here it is anyway...:)

"

Fifty years ago times were like this,
A boy and girl would blush at the slightest kiss.
A man named Hank was on the radio,
And people still waved at folks they didn’t even know.

And fifty years ago on a farm in Carolina
A boy met this girl and said “I want her to be mine”
So he took his chances , and he gave it his best,
And after a little romancing she finally said yes…

(Chorus)
Now fifty years later through the tears and laughter,
His heart still chases that girl that he went after,
And she smiles her little smile ,
Because she knows she let him catch her,..fifty years ago.

As time went by they were friends and lovers,
The kid seem to come one after another,
Worrying and raising them to know right from wrong,
Healing hurts with hugs that made their house a home

And as the kids grew up, and left one by one
To take on the world and have kids of their own,
With memories and pictures hanging on the wall,
To have never had much, it seems they have it all.

(chorus)
Because fifty years later through the tears and laughter,
His heart still chases that girl that he went after,
And she smiles her little smile ,
Because she knows she let him catch her,..fifty years ago.

When years from now these days are gone,
And they’re strolling in heaven arm in arm,
It won’t be fame or fortune that’s their legacy,
But their family knows what it will be.

It’s a treasure sought by many and found by some,
Seen on the faces of generations to come,
It’s what really matters, their love left behind,
That started with this boy and girl ,..in Carolina.

(last chorus)
And fifty years later and for each day after,
His heart will still be chasing that girl he went after,
And she’ll smile that smile,
because she knows she’ll let him catch her
Like fifty years ago……..

this is just one that is special to me because my parents are special! and still doing well!..:)
The "Hank" referred to is Hank Williams Sr., because my dad always told us that when he asked my mom to marry him she said no, then he sang Hanks song "cold cold heart" to her and she said yes. Mom would just grin when he told it so we always thought it was just one of his tales , but my mom recently confessed it was true,...so i partly owe my existence to Hank...lol

True enough, it's so easy to build a house than to create a home. Many of us long for the latter but only few get the chance. Such is a sweet and wonderful tribute. That's a beautiful lyrics and that must have a wonderful melody too.
