We Were Like Actors

We Were Like Actors

A Poem by Lexi Nicole
"

We'd stand on our marks and hold each others' hand and whisper all those rehearsed lines.

"
We were like actors
With our lines all prepared
And the set was just perfect
For the nights that we shared
And we’d stand on our marks
And hold each others’ hand
And whisper all those rehearsed lines
“I love you” “You’re perfect”
“You’re beautiful” “I need you”
And you’d lean in and kiss me
While the world went silent
Yeah, we were just like actors
In a perfect little world
Reading off a script
Pretending the words had meaning
Pretending we were in love
Making everyone believe
We were perfect
And at night we’d go home
Different homes, different beds
With all of those lines echoing in our heads
And scripts are just love stories
Written up by dreamers
And actors do their best to make the dreams come true
But, just like you and me
When the director calls “cut!”
All the actors go home
To their own separate lives
And movies are just movies
Moving pictures on the screen
Once the credits start to roll
Well, that’s the end of the dream
So we were just like actors
Making everyone believe
That love stories were as real
As all the movies they had seen
But the credits are rolling
And it’s time to go home
Just like actors
Alone

Ooh! I really like the format of this its like movie credits! And this was really really interesting, it takes a lot for me to even finish some poems but this one i kept reading, it dragged me in :) I liked it a lot keep it up!

I love this. It is a really insightful take on romance and dating; plus the rhyme scheme is done really well.

My only critique is that I didn't like when you started to explain the actors side of it (starting at line 24) merely because it seems superfluous. The reader can tell that this is an analogy for acting, and an explanation of what actors do isn't needed because most people know that already.

Nonetheless, the poem as a whole is beautiful, sad, and amazing.

Yes...that worked out very well. Easy to read and very memorable, which is hard to achieve when there are soooooooo many poems written on love and heartache.

Keep it up.
