If only she knew of the hearts that she broke
Of the tears being shed
Of the lives come undone
All because of a choice
Because now her room is empty
And her family walks by it
And they know she’s not there
But their hearts jump to their throats
Because they can’t help but hope
That they’ll turn around and see her
And their hope is always shattered
When they’re greeted by a ghost
If only he could see all the pain that he caused
The endless, restless nights
The dreams of last goodbyes
Because now his chair is empty
And his mother can’t stop crying
And his father never sleeps
And his sister won’t stop asking
Why he hasn’t been home in weeks
A choice left rooms and chairs and hearts
Empty and cold and distraught
They had love they didn’t see
Love could have been their weapon
In the battles they didn’t know could be fought
Their memory will haunt those who only loved
Who only wanted to love, who wished to understand
Who are wronged despite never wronging
Who hurt yet despite never inflicting pain
Sometimes, when the rain falls
They see phantoms in the windows
And they wish the phantoms were real
They wish that they could reach out
And hold their son, their daughter,
their sister, their brother, their father, their mother
their lover, their friend- but they can’t
Because their son or their daughter or sister or brother,
their father or mother or lover or friend
chose not to come home again
And memories settle in dust on their chairs
Which are empty and cold like the hearts left behind
Because they had been selfish and utterly blind
