we are out there

we are out there

A Poem by Courtney Hough

Hello earthlings,
We come from beyond.
We’ve been watching for awhile,
To see if we’d get along.

We must admit we are impressed,
You’ve reached for the stars.
Progress was being made,
Then you went too far.

People of Earth we are near,
we know you look for us.
But we cannot show ourselves,
Because it’s you we don’t trust.

You cannot share your planet,
You kill those who are different, not of your kind.
Yet you still search for us,
Your hearts are very blind.

There are many innocent,
However, the bad outweighs the good.
Humans even take their own lives,
To escape this livelihood.

You’ve killed your planet,
And soon you all will be next.
We want to intervene,
But this's not ours, it’s your test.

There are many more then us,
You are not the center of it all.
Till you abolish this thought,
It will be the end to you all.

But do not despair,
There is good among you.
Listen to the ones with soft hearts,
Their intentions are true.

Begin to change your ways,
And start to live the way you were made.
Then we would come to you,
And have no need to be afraid.

Ironically, this is a great example of how we as a society have begun to move in the direction that this poem pushes towards. Back in the good ol' days an alien story was about an alien invasion. Now a days most authors take a different approach to it, seeing humans as the main antagonists or at least as the catalysts for the war. First example to come to mind is Ender's Game. As is the case with most works of fiction, the message of this piece is not about ET watching us from the sky but simply to take a objective view of the world and point out societal faults. Well done.

I don't know Courtney. If some higher being come back and saw the mess, men made. They would be very upset. Thank you for sharing the powerful words and thoughts. You made the reader think.

Yes we do! We’ve lost our way indeed.
