Prologue
Across the Flames
The light linger on my face, as I peered into the captured flames. The bricks covering the fireplace were blackened from the many years of use. It was hard to watch the flames, yet impossible to look away. I knew fire's secrets. It was my friend, my ally, my alpha. Its past discussed me. It's past hurt me. But its future lured me to follow. I wanted the flames to die and wished they could feel pain. They needed to know how it felt, to loose the game of reality. They needed to know how it felt to have to fight all the time. A tear ran down my face, I swept it away. I wouldn’t not cry. It only showed how much I wished for the past. How much I needed the past. This was one of the only seconds alone I had to really think in a long time. My life is always full of bratty children playing tag and other girls cheerfully talking of boys and hair. I liked being able to think it felt nice. It just felt nice. I stared out into the flames again and let it hypnotize me once more...
