Dream
The song stays plays on, poignant and beautiful as I sleep. I drift. I dream. Fragments of happy dreams run together, all including Edmond's presence. To sleep in such a happy state is a welcome change from the nightmares Edmonds has appeared in ever night since I met him.
But it all begins to change. Happy dreams become murky and dark, like I am drowning again. Edmond is ripped away from me and I am alone in this frightening place. I am floating alone… so alone. All I can hear is my own heartbeat, hammering with fear.
But there is a light. One single flame burns under the shadowy water. I float towards it, mystified. Unable to stop myself, this is a dream after all, I reach out to touch the magical flame.
That is a mistake.
The instant my finger connects with the fire, an icy blast hits me and knocks me backward, breaking through the water. I am now flying through the air. I can only see flashes. I try to focus on what I can make out as it flies by so quickly.
A ship
An island
Pirates
A burning desert
A storming sea
A tangled forest
A mountain reaching the heavens
Another island
Then there is Edmond, lying broken on the ground, blood trickling from his lips.
Bruises on his face
Scars on his chest
I scream a bloodcurdling scream as my worst fear lies before me.
But I cannot make a sound.
I try to run to him, to help him.
But I cannot move.
I am not there.
Then it all fades.
Slowly
I think it is over.
But there is one more flash.
The most beautiful and most hideous woman in the world
Screaming
For my death
Then I can scream.
"EDMOND!"
