Herschel’s Log

November 29, 1943

            They’re here.

            Two and a half years I’ve spent wondering which of them is even alive. And suddenly all three are here at my doorstep, wandering the ghetto.

            This is Rebecca’s doing. She wrote Gabe. Gabe wrote Jim. It’s a stroke of fate that Erich would be here too, but if Rebecca says so I believe her. I should be out there looking for them; it’s getting dark outside and Jim and Gabe could both be dead in an hour if they aren’t careful. But the journal, my journal, is finally in my hands again, and I couldn’t help but write. It’s like an addiction.

            I can’t keep writing. I’m wasting time. Later tonight, I’ll try and put down the whole story of what happened after the bombing. But if they die tonight, it’s on me. I have to go out. Knowing the three of them, they’re sure to find each other. And knowing them, it will be a disaster if they do.
