Knowing that athletes depend on their feet to provide force and supportive balance, Hope has crafted an index of quick footcare tips for sports players everywhere. Here are Hope Jacoby's top footcare tips for athletes. Invest in High-Quality Shoes If you are participating in a specific athletic activity more than three times a week, purchasing a sport-specific pair of shoes is a must. When trying shoes on, be sure that the heel is sturdy enough to deliver adequate support and test to ensure there is enough room for you to wiggle your toes comfortably. Wear Good Socks If you train extensively or outside when it's warm, refrain from wearing cotton socks, which are prone to becoming damp from sweat and causing blisters. Don't Pop Blisters Blisters are generally the result of increased pressure, and they often occur in damp conditions. Good-quality socks and properly fitting shoes can aid in blister prevention. But if you notice a blister developing, refrain from popping it at all costs to avoid infection. Monitor for Warning Signs If any region of your body starts to hurt while engaging in a sport, take a break. Follow the guidelines below if you notice any early warning signs of an injury. 1. Take a break and rest your feet. 2. Apply ice to the injured region for 20 to 40-minute intervals and repeat as necessary. However, do not apply ice if you have diabetes or nerve or circulation issues. 3. Cover and wrap the injured part of your body with an elastic bandage for support. 4. Elevate your feet while sitting or lying down to help alleviate inflammation and discomfort.
