wishA Poem by Bethany ReilmannA peek into my heart on a night when love didn't go my way.leaning forward, stone cutting into palms and fingers, "he's waiting for you just on the other side". leaning still until I fall, the stagnant water catching me, caressing me. all of my spent wishes surround me-- nickels, dimes, drachmas, fallen stars and birthday candles. "he's here darling, look". i spin to meet a fading shadow, and i sigh in defeat: i am alone once again. raw lungs and dry throat i climb my way up to the sky like a soldier returns from war only to dust myself off, clean myself up, and prepare to fall back down again. © 2017 Bethany Reilmann |
