To Love and Be Loved

To Love and Be Loved

A Poem by Holly Soques
"

Why has love always been such a dilemma for as long as there have been humans walking the earth? More often than not, the reason lies within.

"

To love and be loved is surely a goal

as valid as one can be imagined,

For who amongst you would deign to live alone

in the company of none but your own?

The pain of first love with its crushing joy,

the secret feelings, the dreams, fantasies,

all mould into one and are thrown upon

the one on whom my eyes are set: anon.

Next, the lovers then pass by - one by one -

until all meaning ceases, for they are

not worthy of their title, and forsook

me as I did them, for all that it took.

And now I am but an old, bitter, hag,

reluctant to muster even some sense

in old age. Still encumbered by romance

of old, I seek but one man to entrance.

For what I would give, my heart, my body,

my very soul I could sell - to Beelzebub, or worse -

if only I could be loved in return for my recourse!

Please be open-minded about the structure - I know it doesn't strictly follow any accepted poetic form, but I've still been tempted to steal some techniques... :D

"Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me. For me! FOR MEEEEEE!!!!" This made me think of two things, Moulin Rouge and Bohemian Rhapsody. It was wonderful because those are two things I love to be reminded of!
