Ripped Flannel//Flightless Bird

Ripped Flannel//Flightless Bird

A Poem by lizardbrain

First one button
Then the other
But somehow I've managed to hang onto them
Across multiple states

Every day more of my elbow peeks out
And the open sleeves flap
like a flightless bird's wings
Just stretching out,
Not preparing for anything

Sometimes I feel like a flightless bird
Evolution's cruel joke
I wonder if they know what they're missing out on - that soaring view from above
To them, a bird's eye view is something completely different
It's just what they're looking at
No more, no less

As I am just what you're looking at
No more, no less
Ripped flannel, dirty hair
Because I don't feel the need to mend or wash today
Maybe this bird's eye view isn't what you had expected either
But I'm here all the same

One day I'll sew my elbow back into it,
flannel cocoon
But today is my day to breathe
And let it all go.
