In terms of answering your question, mythologically Narcissism is very extreme. And, Psychologically, it is also an extreme trait. I think that we are all on a continuum which runs from tramp-don't-care to Narcissist, but very few thankfully dwell to near that far edge. Narcissists tend to demand the attention of others, too, making it quite a socially imposing personality feature.
You get narcissists online, and they talk about themselves a lot and try to look cool. By the way do you know that I am made of first edition first issue Action Comics and have muscles the size of ocean waves?

You do have some good points, because as you said narcissism is an extreme characteristic, but narcissism isn't a set in stone trait. It can fluctuate and people can be more narcissistic than others.

It was a narcissist male cogently discussing how he attracted and used females. I am sure it was linked to regularly on a forum for women discussing such relationships.

Because these terms -- which come from literature, as Freud based his explanation of humanity on myths -- have taken on a life of their own beyond the diagnostic science of clinical/psychiatric psychology.
