Life before Tragedy

Chapter 1

I remember when the earth didn’t smell like rotting flesh. I remember when others were kind and we had no need to worry about who envied our skin.  Those times when no one was ready for this, I mean who the hell would of thought the world would “end” in a sense. Sure, we all had our theories, we all thought the Mayan calendar was right at one point in our existence. I never could of predicted it would spread like this.. All she wanted was to feel, perfect and that poor girl, my best friend, started all of this. But, I’m getting ahead of myself, let me start from the beginning. My name is Serine, and this is how I survived the “zombie” apocalypse.

 

A few days before we even had a clue what was going on, I was just hanging out with my friends in our local library. Just a group of people hanging out, playing the newest games that filled our heads with beautiful graphics with no story line to match. Some of us were just hanging out in the corner of the club room, some of us running around or dancing to music. My close friends and I spent our time racing each other in Mario Kart. Just Mia, Luke, Maryann, Josh and myself, all surrounded around a box-like television, hoping one of us would become victorious over all others. “ You b***h! “ was often heard from Josh’s mouth when Mia passed him. She’d laugh in his face and continue to ride through on star power. Though this would look like the typical teenagers who spend their time loitering around a public area, this was something we didn't normally do. Due to some troubles at home, Maryann wanted to get out more instead of hanging in her basement like usual. So along our walk from our school, we stopped in our local library to see what could be interesting. Finding an open club room and a friendly community, we stopped for a while.  

We even look like the typical teenagers. Most of us with long, styled brown hair, except for Josh who had red hair, small figures on the ladies covered in massive hoodies themed with either Mario, Zelda or Portal, and converse on the entire groups feet. We've spent majority of our time together since I've known Mia since Pre-K. Maryann I met in middle school, and Josh has been a family friend since I was born. We even have the same birthday. Its strange to think of the relationships we have with others as indefinite, but I could never see into the future, if only I could of know what was going to happen to us.

Not bad, but a little short. You've got good exposition here and the story seems to be easy to follow so far, but I'd advise expanding on this a little more - I've always felt that a chapter should be a single, solid block of a piece, able to, at least in some regards, stand on its own, and I'm not entirely sure that this can.
