Soles to the SunA Story by H.L. Pauffa short piece written for #5minutefictionShe kicked her feet forward and soared into the sky. The
rusty swing creaked and groaned as she built momentum. The cuts on her arms
sent stabbing pains through her upper body as they rubbed against the metal
chain of the swing. The bruises on her back throbbed as her muscles worked to
thrust her higher into the air. A flock of birds flew overhead towards the sun, squawking and chirping like they were having the time of their lives. They sped away from the house much like her brother did many summers ago. He promised he would come back for her and she looked out her bedroom window every night for any sign of him. The screaming and arguing coming from the house was getting louder and more heated by the minute. She worked harder and pushed her body, hoping the sounds of the ancient swing would drown out her parents. She lifted her soles to the sun. She wanted to fly away like the birds. © 2012 H.L. Pauff |
