It is satirical. Bitter almonds contain cyanide at high enough levels to kill a person. Sweet almonds contain only trace amounts of it. Cyanide is what they poisoned themselves with at Jonestown cult. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drinking_the_Kool-Aid)

At the time I wrote this I had a number of friends "drinking the cool-aid" in a cult like setting.
