Hush!

Hush!

A Poem by H.L. Cerveise

Hush!

Oh so many years ago my love you told me to hush.

“Do not speak of what you hear.”

“I understand,” you said softly sweetly into my ear.

“I feel it, deep down, in my soul,” I say.

“I know,” you said, “Do not tell, others will not understand.”

“It has to be this way. I can see it so clearly," I say.

“You must not tell others what you see.

They will see it as blasphemy.

They will cast you into utter darkness.” You said.

That night the dream died.

In the black inky sky, the stars still twinkled.

Nevertheless, the visions changed, and the universe mutated.

Author's Note

H.L. Cerveise
This is about a pivotal time in my past. I wrote about it long after the fact; however, it was so vivid in my mind after all those years. I had no choice but to put it down in writing. I hope this poem reminds you of one of your life-changing pivot points.

Silence never solves issues
Neither is speech
There is a balance of composure between both
Knowing what needs to be told can change the path of many for generations
While knowing what to withhold will protect many for years

It's a matter of wisdom

Being told to be silent does not change the reality of a situation and it can often change how one perceives the world around them. Carrying the burden of a secret comes with a price and it can take a hefty toll on a person. "Nevertheless, the visions changed, and the universe mutated." Beautiful poem. Thanks for sharing it.

They must not know... Yet the truth remains. I personally felt a little pang of frustration that 'others wouldn't understand ' something that was felt deep down in a soul. Wonderfully deep, mysterious and thought provoking. I really like this one. :)

That last stanza left this really je-ne-sais-quoi feeling in my gut: melancholy but a little hopeful, especially with the word-choice where "the universe mutated". Whenever something pivotal happens, I always feel as if the world I knew has done exactly that - "mutated" into a completely different monster, for better or worse and I feel like the prior line provides some sort of solace in how traditionally we associate stars as a constant in our lives and a sublime part of nature we can always gaze at whenever we're feeling lost.
