My thoughts on Cloud Atlas

Please read the book and watch the movie if you like the kind of things this story tells.

Cloud Atlas

How to begin this, I'm not sure, but I know I have to write it now. I just got back from watching Cloud Atlas. I will admit the book is not an easy read, but I implore you to read the book and then see the movie. If you have a soul or a heart or ever felt alone or loved someone and lost that love. If you have ever felt you are in the wrong time and place, but also felt that this is the right time and place because you sensed or felt something about it, or you were important. If any of that sounds familiar or all of that like it does to me, watch the movie.

As I drove home from the theatre, Bleep and R2D2 (bluetooth headset and smart phone, yes I name my tech deal with it) was playing me tunes. The first was “Somewhere Before” by The Dreamside, second was “Set Fire To The Rain” by Adel, third was “Another Stranger Me” by Blind Guardian, fourth was “Sound of Madness” by Shinedown and finally “Memento Mori” by Kamelot. Now you may ask why do I tell you this, because my dear reader all these songs echoed the movie to me or reminded me of things in my own life that seemed to circle back to the story.

When I got back to my shack (that is another story for some other time) after watching the movie, it was 44 degrees inside. I turned on the propane heater with shaking cold hands. I poured myself a tall glass of scotch ale from a local brewery went back outside and gazed for a long time at the sky. The milky way was out in full force my sight settled and fixed on Orion the Hunter, suddenly a shooting star streaked across the sky. I laughed and cried at the same time, and as I stood there I knew it was a show just for me because I was at the right time and place at least for now. If you watch the movie, you will see why the shooting star is important, but be careful not to blink at the wrong time.

As a writer I hope sometime in my lifetime that I will write something as good as this book and movie. The experience of having read the book filled in gaps that the movie could not cover. However, the movie took turns that are not in the book, but I think expanded and made the feel of the story even better.

As Bleep plays “I Get Off “by Halestorm, I think I will finish this, it is now 62 degrees in my shed, which is perfect sleeping temperature for me. I will curl up in my sleeping bag, listen to “Archangel” by Two Steps From Hell until I get real sleepy and fall asleep and dream.

You have described the book and the movie based on it so well that now I have no alternative, but to read the book, see the movie and go on listening to its dulcet songs. Thanks for sharing this work of yours.
