Caged

Caged

A Poem by H.L. Alexander
"

My first piano escape location at Auburn.

"

Here in this ballroom,

glancing through glass walls,

hovering over the Plains,

the baby grand is mine

if only for this moment.

My fingertips wisp covetously

over the ivories,

aching in time with the pulse

of my broken, bittersweet melodies.

I need a place to lift my weighted mind,

to feel my truths, to accept,

to breathe

peace.

In this building,

books and people crowd each floor.

The sounds of my heart,

seeping softly through the cracks,

drifting into the halls, lingering outside the doors.

Can I be uncaged?

No solitude.

Just a lovely, bird’s eye view

of orange and blue,

and the black and white beneath my fingertips.
