My World and YoursA Poem by H.L. AlexanderFrom my creative writing portfolio in college. Based on a picture of Charlie Brown and Snoopy. Unfortunately, I'm unable to relocate the picture. :(Slumped over in disappointment, I shuffle my feet, creating
dust clouds behind me, unaware
of the dirty paint-chipped fence posts along my way; sorrowful
after an appointment with the principal, and
all for losing the spelling bee. Even
the skies above mime my melancholy as
the clouds cover the sun with gray.
The
grass trembles in the light breeze and crushes under my feet. In
the distance is the sound of a cheery harmonica, reciting
old American folk tunes. “Oh
Susanna” drifts faintly to my ears, Yet
I remain unaware, or I simply do not care. Tree
branches sway above me conducting an orchestra, but
I will never sprout as tall, and I am without enough hope to
even offer a simple prayer.
My
shoulders give way to the emptiness of the day and
it sinks down. Loneliness
pulses through my body, and
I search for companionship. I
find a friend, in hopes that the glum of this day will turn around. Sadly,
my friend is busy, vacuumed inside his own universe, and
is not in a state for fellowship. Fantasizing
he is a fighter pilot, he roars over mountains and seas.
It
still does not occur to me that each one has his own thoughts,
feelings, and life; and
that our strengths and weaknesses and
our struggles belong
to us individually, making
us all blind. We
only feel what we know, and what we are, and
what we do and do not like. So
I sigh, still
not realizing that everything and everyone around me is
self-centered in some way, just
like me. © 2012 H.L. Alexander |
