After
reading the first seven chapters, “An Irretrievable Step”
announces itself as the story of a career officer caught in the vise
of military machinations and political plots. The beginning of the
novel finds Doron Seri content in his low-ranking position, with good
prospects for a comfortable promotion, and a girl friend that loves
him. But after one of his superiors asks him to meet with an
intelligence service recruiter, his entire life changes.
During
the first chapters, the tension of the story is maintained by
author’s ability to stir the reader’s curiosity rather than
heavy-packed action. The author drops hints about negative events
(the capture of the number-one spy in Syria), while in the
foreground a mysterious job offer keeps the reader wanting to know
more. Seri’s laid-back attitude contrasts with the tension that
seems to built in the background. In the beginning the main character
lives a calm, if not luxurious, life that prevents him from grasping
the gravity of his situation. However, by the end of chapter seven he
becomes the victim of his own innocence and lack of political
insight.
I personally liked the view of Seri’s personal
life"I don’t think most thrillers present an in-depth view of the
family life of the main character, and in this “An Irretrievable
Step” is different. Seri’s emotions towards his girl friend are
very realistic"he starts convinced that he doesn’t love Tami.
Neither does he want to meet her parents, nor has he any desire to
introduce her to his own family. As the chapters progress, he seems
to pine for more than sex and suspects that one day he will look back
to these moments of his life with melancholy.
In my
opinion “An Irretrievable Step” is a refreshing and authentic
perspective of an officer’s (and later spy’s) life. An enjoyable
story written in a comfortable and easy-flowing style.
