Emergency breakfast

The year 2048

An excerpt

On the twenty ninth of November 2048, hundred one years after the UN general assembly had adopted the partition plan, which divided the land of Israel between Arab and Jews; Tsyion Gorali woke up rather late to another gray day of routine. He left his bed and stretched his limbs a second or two, before he went over to the bathroom. An eerie silence reigned all over the vast apartment. His young wife was still asleep in her bedroom.

She’d too much to drink last night, he thought remembering the party in which they participated in their community tower’s residents banquet hall. I’d too a drink or two above my usual level of drinking, but I’m used to it. He thought watching his face in the mirror.

Well I’ll have a cup of coffee until Alcina will wake up, and we’ll have breakfast together.

While he was warming up a frozen coffee cup, his wife appeared in the kitchen.

Good morning my love, shall I warm another cup of coffee for you too?’

No thanks I’d rather have orange juice.’ Alcina replied and went over to the fridge. She pulled out the wanted can of juice and retreated towards the Kitchen, where her husband was already sitting on his cup of coffee.

It’s Monday morning my dear have you forgotten it? I thought you were already working in your study.’ She remarked as she sat opposite her husband.

I haven’t much work my dearest, I’ll see to it after lunch; but we’re supposed to renew our ELE (Enhanced Life Expectency), at the community hall in a couple of hours.’

Okay let’s have breakfast then, and find out what’s going on in our community.’ Alcina replied and switched on the kitchen opposite wall screen. The upper two thirds of the white wall turned into a light blue screen, and a popular ad in golden huge letters appeared on the huge screen.

If you want to see anything my dear, you’d better leave your seat and sit beside me. Alcina told him while she pressed a button on the small control board at her right hand side.

Okay, okay my dearest,’ Tsyion muttered as he left his seat, and went around the table to sit beside his wife. ‘And stop pressing that button my dearest, you’ve forgtten to reload our Rubbi (the appartment multi task robot) with elecricity last night.’ He added with a note of admonishment. ‘So you’ll better get up and serve us, cause Rubbi won’t leave his alcove unless...’

Why didn’t you remind yesterday?’

It didn’t occur to me that he’s drained up, you usually take care of it whenever it’s needed.’ He looked at his wife with demanding stare.

You must be famished my love.’ Alcina said mockingly while leaving her seat.

And do reload Rubbi first of all, and fetch us something to eat no matter what, I’m sick and tired of having to watch three quarters of an hour those boring ads of immigration to the moon before any news item is displayed on that goddamn screen.’
