excerpt Arkadi
Tiomkin the head of the department of illegal agents of directorate S, which
illegal intelligence is under its authority; sat at the head of his
department's staff weekly meeting, in his office at the SVR Yasenovo
headquarters building. Although
most of his department's missions were not running in the best possible way,
the way the department dealt with the American spy; that CIA agent of Russian
descent, which defected and offered his services to his father land, gained him
and his department the praise of the service big boss Mikhail Yefimovich
Fradkov. The
department's most critical issues were already discussed, and reasonable and
satisfactory conclusions were drawn; it was the right time to turn the
attention to the American defector's preparations, and his future tasks with
the service. The main suggestion was to send him to Syria, the Damascus embassy
suffered from lack of manpower; but what should be his next stage if he'll fit
in and survive, and how should he serve there? 'How's
the American doing and what's his nickname, do remind me Fiodor Ivanovich?' He
turned to his deputy. 'Alex
is his nickname we didn't intend to hide his new identity, his full name is
Alexei Garin.' His deputy answered with a slight cough. He knew very well that
his boss knows what the American personal details are. It was his boss usual
trick to reinforce his authority. 'He's
in Kazan with Alina the pretty young Tatar female, they've just settled there;
and in about six weeks at the most they'll return, and he'll be sent to
Damascus.' 'Did
they specify what he's supposed to do there?' 'They've
requested to send them able young men for security tasks of persons, body
guards in fact and to guard the embassy premises.' His deputy answered him 'Was
he trained to handle a gun? I mean back at the American training camp.' 'No
he wasn't and from his own testimony we learned that he passed a limited
training, which can't be compared with the basic training that our agents have
to pass.' 'Then
see that he'll be taught to handle light weapons, for a period of two weeks at
least.' 'Yes
sir I'll see to it in person, but I'm sure that due to the two weeks delay our
Damascus embassy won't need his services anymore; we've sent them several
candidates already to choose from, and the few that won't fit in will be sent
back home.' 'I
see so order your experts to plan two more options for our American, Alex is
his name isn't it?' 'Yes
sir that's his name.' 'Now
then if the Damascus embassy would become irrelevant, we can send him to one of
our consulates in the United States; he lived several years there and he speaks
fluent English, do order your experts to prepare such an option.' 'Won't
it be preferable sir to choose some other English speaking country; he's got a
family in New Jersey.' 'You
think that we'd better keep him longer away, yes you're right Fiodor it's a
point that we should take into account; but we need to increase our efforts of
intelligence gathering over there, and he could be sent as a recruiter and
agents' operator. In that case I believe that sending the Tatar female with him
as his spouse will solve the problem.' 'She's
doing an excellent job here In Moscow sir, due to her ties with foreign
diplomats; she's very sought by many of them thanks to her exceptional good
looks, and assigning her to accompany Alex would be a setback to our
department. You can understand sir how dependent we're on the intelligence that
she alone is able to gather, and if we'll send her along with the American
she'll be under Sergei's S4 department. 'Well
yes we don't want to lose her Fiodor; it was just an attempt in brainstorming
to reach the right conclusions.' © Haim
