A sketchy briefing

"Identity Conflict"

An excerpt

The next morning from nine am on Yuri was sitting in the company of six men. The camp commander and the commander's deputy, his two personal instructors, his operator and the camp's guest from Langley.

To his surprise he was the last one to enter the commander's office, and was introduced without the slightest delay to Langley's expert.

The latter did not introduce himself not even in his first name, but kept watching Yuri with an intent look before he started to talk.

Yuri watched with amazement that stranger with the short blond hair and light blue eyes, quite sure that he is trying hard to impress him.

You don't impress me at all, Yuri thought disappointed, despite the middle aged stranger good looks and youngish features; on the contrary, the stranger's behavior at that early stage aroused Yuri's distrust.

'We were informed on your achievements during your training and tests, well done.' The stranger remarked with a pleasant smile. 'The time is ripe to embark on your first mission, which isn't easy at all…  We do count on you and on your resolution and courage, which you've proved all along your training and your graduation tests. Next Saturday you'll fly to Tokio, Japan with your American passport; you'll have in your possession a Russian passport according to your mission's identity. Right after your landing  you'll be accompanied by one of our agents there, which will direct to a Japanese whaler with which you'll sail to your destination. All minute instructions and the details concerning your personal background, your identity are contained in this pad.' Langley's expert added and handed him the pad. 'You'll study it and learn by heart all the details that you need to know, up to your flight and during the sail on board the whaler.'

'How long will it take the whaler to reach my destination?' Yuri had to express his douts, the briefing seemed to him rather sketchy.

'Well about ten to twelve days, it depends on the whether of course.'

'Isn't it a too short time to learn meticulously all the details that I need to know?'

'It more than enough and you'll have documents to prove your identity and background, like invoices, newspapers, magazines; to remind you what you must remember, in short when you'll start studying the pad's contents you'll realize how well you'll be prepared by it. Well then, let's not waste precious time, get back to your cabin and start studying, and the best of luck Yuri.' Langley's expert extended his right hand to a warm handshake. Yuri stood up while the rest of the persons present at the office offered their blessings.
