"Some Facts of Life"

An excerpt

There was no particular pressure after he landed in Baltimore airport at the passage to the baggage collecting hall compared to his landing in New York of course. Thus everything passed rather quickly, but he had to open up his suitcase at the customs check post; and passed a few unpleasant moments. But noticing his brother Ezra waving to him excitedly near the terminal's exit changed his feelings from one end to another. He pushed his trolley and quickened his step up to the terminal entrance and his waiting brother, the latter spread his arms and they hugged each other and exchanged kisses on each other's cheeks.

Ezra looked much older to his age, he was just forty eight years old, and the last time that they have met was in Eliahu's marriage ceremony; Eliahu was stupefied to realize how much his older brother changed, but kept these thoughts to himself.

'Well how was the flight dearest Eli?'

'It was alright despite the long hours it took me, and how are you dear brother and how's Mali and the kids?'

'We're all fine and Mali will be delighted to see you, just as I'm. But you were supposed to come tomorrow…?'

'I'd an open date ticket and in our last video chat I've noted tomorrow as my arrival, I do remember it well Ezra but I'd to leave earlier… Anyway it's a long story…' Eliahu remarked on their way to the airport's parking lot.

'Alright Eli, oh here's my car let's load your suitcase and get moving,' Ezra said while he unlocking his car, and opened the car's boot.

'Shouldn't I return the trolley first of all? I'll be right back.'

'Oh come on Eli don't bother just leave it here, you can't reimburse the few dollars you paid for using it, and it serves as part of the porters salary. So leave it and get into the car.'

They had some twenty minutes ride up to Ellicott City to Ezra's dwelling, thus Ezra had enough time to pump up his young brother.

'We haven't met since your marriage with Eti. We kept inviting you two and if you would've answered our invitation just once, it might have saved your marriage, we were sorry to learn about your divorce dear Eli.'

'It was unavoidable Ezra, I did my best to prevent it, but she said she can't go on living with me.'

'What about your kids, you won't be able to see them and they won't remember you. You don't miss them already, they're your kids!'

'She incited them against me, they don't love me Ezra. I know how bad it sounds but that the bare truth.' He lied to his brother without hesitation or any guilt feelings.

'I might meet them again, when they'll grow up and be free of their mother's influence.'

'It's breaks my heart Eli and Mali will be shocked, I haven't told her yet that you've divorced Eti.' Ezra admitted gloomily, and then as if he recalled suddenly his hidden apprehension, he hastened to ask: 'what made you fly a day earlier Eli, you haven't done some foolish things I hope…'

'No of course not although I'd to leave as soon as possible, and I'd to pay the flight company the additional fare of one hundred and fifty dollars.' Eliahu added while watching his brother with wry smile. 'Well the reason is a reserve service, which I've dodged; the company manpower has postponed it about a month earlier, and after I've resigned because I wished to emigrate I've become in fact a deserter.

'But you could report at your reserve unit, and solve that problem…'

'A war is about to break out up north with Lebanon, and I don't want to get killed or wounded Ezra, or rely on a miracle and come out of it safe and sound. I've done my share of compulsory and reserve service in a fighting unit and I've had enough,'
