Unexpected guestsA Story by Haim KadmanThe novel Some Facts of Life is my 17th book, it would be published soon.Unexpected guests Some Facts of Life An excerpt When he got off and locked his car, Yehiel saw his
foster parents standing beside their parked car, just a few yards away. He knew
that he is in some trouble, they have never came to meet him without a notice
of some kind before. He did not know yet what the matter could be, but noticing
their stern features as he approached them worried him. His mom was holding
rather tight her purse in her right hand, and his dad carried an attaché case.
Both of them were tensed and their long faces raditated it very clearly. 'Hello mom and dad can I invite you inside?' He asked
politely his foster parents, Mrs. Gilla and Mr. Reuven Smolnik. They did not
answer just nodded their heads and turned towards the building's entrance, and
walked along each of them on both his sides. The last time he paid them a visit was during the
previous month, some three weeks ago; and since then he has not seen them, and
has not called them either. He hoped to God that was the reason, why they are
so upset. He let them in and asked them politely to sit down,
while he went over to the kitchenette to prepare coffee for his unexpected
guests. While he was busy with the kettle his mom made a round in studio's
bedroom and bathroom, and retruned to the living long after Yehiel was sitting
beside his foster dad, and three cups of coffee plus some refrshments were put
on the small corner table. His foster mom made a negative sign with her head
towards his foater father, and sat down next to her foster son. They sat a
second or two in silence, not one of them touched the refreshments or his cup
of coffee, and it seemed to Yehiel that his foster parents found it hard to
speak up, and say what the matter is, what bothers them so much. Reuven Smolnik cleared his throat loudly and looked
straight into his foster son's eyes opened up and said; 'We've hired a private
eye two weeks ago, and he brought us very distressing evidence.' Mr. Smolnik
cleared his throat a second time and went on after a few seconds of tensed
silence. "We learned that you're having a relationship with a married
woman, a mother to two small children who is eight years older than you
Yehiel…' 'She's my model and we work together that's all.' 'If she's just your model we could've lived with it,
but you'd better have a look at these photos.' His foster father added while
opening his attaché case. He pulled several photos and handed one of these
photo to his foster son. The photo Yehiel was watching depicted himself and
Eti in his car, locked in each other's armas, and exchanging a kiss. There was
no point in denying it, and he realized it with a heavy heart. 'She's a divorcee and I've no intention to marry
her.' Yehiel protested angrily, taking pains not to lose completely his temper.
As long as he is not marrying Eti, it is none of his foster parents business.
He thought making efforts to get over his growing anger. 'That's exactly what bothers us.' His foster mother
joined the heated up argument. 'We want you to get married and raise a family,
but not with a divorcee with two kids…' 'I've said that I've no intention to marry her mom,
and I'm not so eager to get married…' 'We expect you to stop your relations with this woman,
find youself another model.' His foster father barged in raising his voice.
'Why don't you resume your landscape and still life paintings? We visited the
Gordon gallery and saw the nude paintings of this woman, we were shocked and
ashamed!' He added dramatically. 'We demand that you'll cut off your relations
with your model and return to a modest way of life, with no more nude paintings;
otherwise we won't treat you as our son, and we'll stop supporting you.' A tensed silence ensued while Yehiel sat on
undecided, under the accusing eyes of both his foster parents. He did not want
to give up his relationship with Eti he loved her, and was dependent on her
love; on the other hand the option of cutting off his relations with his foster
parents, and their indispensable support was an impossible move… He was still
completely dependent on them. 'Okay I'll cut off my relations with her, and I won't
paint nude paintings anymore.' Yehiel said after a short and embarrassed lull, and
handed his foster father back the photo. He had no other choice at that early
stage of his career, but to accept their demands for the time being; because he
could not cut off his relations with Eti, he needed her. the first ever woman
that he had known and loved so much. We'll have to carry a covert love affair
from now on, Eti and me. Yehiel concluded stoically. But there was one more thing
that borthered him. 'What am I supposed to do with the nude paintings,
which are exhibited in the gallery?' 'We've bought them and they're packed and stored in
our cellar.' His foster father replied him and stood up, and his foster mother
followed her husband. They left without touching the refreshments and the
coffee. © Haim Kadman May
