The ungrateful sobA Story by Haim KadmanBelow is an except of The Global Threat published digitally with AmazoThe ungrateful SOB The Global Threat An excerpt 'What's the problem for God's sake? Is it that urgent? I'm supposed
to leave in a quarter of an hour time; I've to start a round of farewell
ceremonies at the West Coast… I see, okay I'm waiting for you in my office.'
The president added perturbed, he returned the receiver to its cradle and
switched on his Smartphone. 'Hello Tiger sorry old boy I can't make it… I've got some urgent
and unexpected problems to solve… Yeah that's right it's a real headache, and
it fell on me when I was ready to hop over to watch you play and win the
trophy… Well all the best old boy I'll call you tonight, and you'll have to
tell me all about it, and describe to me up to the last detail how that new
trophy looks.' He added laughing and switched off his Smartphone. 'Damn it!' He muttered under his breath in a completely change of
mood. 'Is anything wrong?' It was the National security advisor that came
in without his notice, so absorbed was he in his thoughts. No Scarlet nothing is wrong, just a change of plans. I'm not flying
to Los Angeles today as planned. He started to explain to her what bothered
him, without the main details of course. 'Hammond called me and he's coming to
update me with some info, which he collected this morning at Langley.' 'Shouldn't we call the National Security Council to attend our
meeting with him?' She asked and tried thus to ensure her presence beside the president.
'Not yet we'd better see what he wants first of all and then we'll
decide… If it isn't too complicated I would leave and let you two to solve the
problem, cause I'm terribly busy as you surely know Scarlet; I've to start my
farewell rounds in the West Coast.' 'But if it's an urgent matter you can start your farewell rounds
tomorrow…' 'Sure I've three months yet left in the office; it's a lot of time,
but I've fixed a date with some people to come, and I don't have to tell you
how they would feel waiting in vain for me at the airport.' He explained to her
feigning frankness, as if he really cared for those who will be waiting for him
the day after tomorrow. 'Oh here he comes,' she said drawing the president attention to the
arrival of the secretary of defense, while he was facing her with his back to
the entrance. 'I hope for your sake Charlie that the info you have brought
justifies its urgency, and I'll be able to excuse myself before the prominent
citizens that are expecting my arrival in three hours time from now.' 'It's very urgent sir and I suggest we'll summon the National
Security Council right after I'll update you.' 'Alright let's sit down and let's hear what it's all about first of
all, and then I'll decide if the info you brought me justifies to summon them or
not.' The president declared resolutely while leading the Hammond to his desk,
where Scarlet was already seated. 'We've had Brown and me an audience with a the Israeli military attaché'
and a Mossad special envoy, and they claim that they have evidence that the
Syrians plus the Turks are planning to attack the Golan heights and the
Northern part of the Kingdom of Jordan.' 'And on what kind of evidence they base their claim?' The president
wondered. 'It isn't some kind of a false alarm, now that the Syrian free army
was defeated.' 'They say that they've a source in the highest echelons of the
other side, they refused to tell us whether it's Damascus or Ankara where their
source is planted. But we've the opinion of Brown's experts, and they believe
it must be Ankara.' 'It might be a hoax and they might be panicked the Israelis, now
that Assad is still in power against all odds and with no relevant foes to endanger his rule, but he's got a full
job to rebuild his county...' 'It isn't a false alarm sir they've shown us documents and maps,
and they wish to have our approval for a pre-emptive strike on Damascus.' 'No way, you tell them that before we'll see movements of Turkish
or Syrian forces and the amassment of Turkish or Syrian forces on their border,
we won't accept their dubious claims!' The president retorted and was quite
upset. He had no intention to summon the National Security Council members, and
to sit over this trifle up to midnight. He had other plans how to pass his
time, and this unexpected headache infuriated him. 'But it's a serious problem that should be solved right away sir.'
The defense minister persisted. 'I don't believe them after they've caused us that humiliating
fiasco with the Palestinians in 2014 with their spins and lies… You know what
Charlie I'll leave it to you and to Brown to deal with it, and you'll update me
while I'll be on my farewell rounds in the West Coast.' 'Shouldn't I and James participate in the meetings with the Israeli
envoys?' The National Security Advisor asked the President. 'You'll represent me Scarlet but let's leave the secretary of state
out of it, he's busy with his presidential campaign and he might mess
everything up as he usually does.' The secretary of defense's Smartphone rang and he hastened to raise
it to his ear and listen. 'It's John he says that the problem isn't that critical it can
wait, but he wants me to come and attend the weekly meeting in Langley.' 'Okay you may leave Charlie,' The president said and stayed beside
Scarlet waiting till the defense secretary left the office. 'Keep an eye on him dear Scarlet; he winks already to the next
republican President.' 'He was so loyal to you, what happened to the tight relations with
that friend of yours?' 'I don't know but he became lately an ungrateful son of a b***h.' © Haim Kadman 2014 " all rights rserved. #suspense, #thriller, #espionage The
