The protégé

"A Post Impressionistic Career"

An excerpt

As soon as his guests left the office, Efrati called his protégé's studio.

'Hello Ra'anan I've sent the interviewer to you, he's accompanied with two female assistants… Do calm down I've briefed them and I've their ward that they'll behave according to your dictation, you don't have to worry at all Ra'anan, The interviewer Asaf Tsevieli is a friendly, polite and a reliable type. He'll take just one hour of your time, and you'll able to keep on painting; you may paint during the interview, if that's what you'll feel like.'

'I've not intention to have lunch with them like on last time, I'd hardly any patience to that dreary man, with which we lunch with and I wasn't able to paint afterwards…'

'Oh no it's alright Ra'anan it isn't the man that disturbed you so much last time, and they'll spend one hour or less with you; it depends on you alone, and then they'll leave you in peace.'

'We saw him on the night his exhibition opening and nothing seemed out of the ordinary with that young man.' Vered reminded Tsevieli while they walked towards Ra'anan's studio.

'He maybe retarded in some way, and that's why Efrati briefed us. We'll have to treat him with kid gloves, and you two shall have to keep your mouths shut all along the interview. I guess he doesn't feel composed and free in the company of women, in any case it's going to be a very short interview.'

'It looks as we'll have to invent most of the story ourselves…' Vered expressed her skeptic opinion, Sigal on the other hand preferred to keep her mouth shut.

'That's why I've taken you two with me, I'll tape him and you'll have to write down your impression and thus you won't get bored.' Tsevieli added with a chuckle.

'But here we're that must be his studio.'

They reached a three storey house typical to Jerusalem, in a dead end ally. The studio was on the ground floor and its door was open.

That's why Efrati asked us to walk over, so he'll have time to brief his protégé. Tsevieli thought amused.

When they entered his studio Ra'anan was standing in front of his easel with a brush and a palette in his hand, as he was in mid painting.

They were seeing before a young man in his teen years, lean and of an average height, with a mope of black curly hair that needed a haircut badly.

Well there's nothing wrong with his appearance it seems, he's shy as Efrati said and maybe hot tempered too, and that must be his problem.

'Hi Ra'anan I'm Asaf Tsevieli and these are Vered and Sigal, they'll write down notes and review the many paintings gathered in your impressive studio.' Tsevieli opened up taking pains to warm a bit the cold atmosphere, with which they were received by Ra'anan.

As a matter of fact there were some half a dozen finished or unfinished paintings on the studio floor leaning with painted faces on the walls.

'Aviraz told me that you're coming, so ask your questions and be quick about it I'm busy.'
