"A Post Impressionistic Career"

An excerpt

A meeting took place at ten thirty am at the Tel Aviv museum general manager's office. The participants except Yon Erstein the museum general manager who returned from a short leave in Europe, were Gal Fine his deputy and the museum's head curator and current exhibition's curator Yoav Otsar.

The meeting main subject was the summing up of last night's exhibition's opening. Yon Erstein the general manager had his doubts about the exhibition's success, and that was the reason why he preferred to take a few days vacation up to the opening, and ordered his deputy to represent him at the opening; he was not far from rejecting the idea, but as the expanses were fully covered by the museum's sponsors and having learned how enormous were the two paintings, he agreed to let the museum's new curator to loan it and hang it at the contemporary art hall for a period of one month.

'So it was a success you say,' he turned to his deputy; the latter smiled and nodded his head in acquiescence.

'What about the artist? Shouldn't we invite him to come and stay with us a few days?' The general manager asked the exhibition's curator.

'Well he said he's terribly busy, but I think he'd the usual artist's fears that his paintings won't get the public attention. It's his first ever paintings.'

'Well that interesting detail wasn't known to me,' the general manager exclaimed. 'How old is he and where did study art?

'He's in his thirties and an autodidact…'

'You don't say, so these paintings were painted during this year no doubt, and what is he doing for a living?' T he general manager went on asking the young and ambitious curator.

'He's a waiter in a certain Manhattan restaurant…'

'You aren't pulling my leg, are you?'

'No of course not sir, I've met him in New York and our first interview took place at the restaurant where he works.'

'I think we'll go out to the hall and have another look at his paintings.' The general manager declared and left his seat and started to move towards the door, with his deputy and the exhibition's curator following him.

When they reached the modern art hall the general manager got closer to one of the paintings and had a good look at it, while the two others joined him, and stood on both his sides.

'It's kitsch that's what it really is, and I'm sorry I've agreed to exhibit it in our museum.'

'But it's a success Yon, you should have seen the enthusiastic visitors' reaction yesterday…' His deputy objected as gently as he could, while the curator was shocked and did not utter a single word.

'I don't wonder Gal with all the preliminary publicity and today's praise articles in most of the papers, except one that its critic realized what it really is. Okay listen Gal and you too Yoav I want it to be packed and sent back to New York in two weeks time not a day later!'
