A smart conclusionA Story by Haim KadmanAn excerpt of the novel A POST IMPRESSIONISTIC CAREER.A post impressionistic
career An excerpt At six thirty am Tsevieli
was already in his office, to give the draft of the inverview with Efrati's
protégé the last touches before Vered would arrive; and then he'll choose two
or three prints of Efrati's protégé's paintings, which Vered took during his
exhibition opening and during the interview. At seven thirty the day's
first task was done with quite an amount of success to Tsevieli's satisfaction,
and till eight am and Vered's arrival he decided to check again the weekly art
column and see what Vered and Sigal have achieved. When Vered atrived at last
at ten past eight, Tsevieli was sitting behind his desk surfing the net. He was
bored after having done all that was needed on his part, except choosing the
prints before showing Dvorkin the complete article. 'Oh there you're Vered good
morning, we'll need two or three prints for the interview, forward me half a
dozen of the best prints of Ra'anan's painting in your opinion.' She seemed surprised and
even offended, he did not wait for a word of greeting from her, or till she'll
settle down behind her desk and switch on her computer; and on top of it he did
not intend to show her the finished article and ask her opinion. She obeyed him without a
single word, and sat sulking hiding her face behind her computer screen. He chose the three most
colorful prints and installed them in the article according to his taste, and
then copied the entire article on a disk-on-key, and went out on his way to
Dvorkin's office. That's the right way to
treat her, with a mingled sweet and bitter treatment. Tsevieli thought quite
pleased with himself. I don't mind if she'll resign and find some other job
elsewhere, I may persuade her room mate to take her place… He thought amused as
crossed Dvorkin's office ante room, and nodded his head smiling still to Zivit.
Dvorkin had several comments
and instructed Tsevielit to correct two of the article's opening phrases, in
his presence. It was exactly what Tsevieli tried to avoid exaggerated praise,
but he knew that his boss knows Efrati better than him, and he is exploiting
Efrati's weaknesses. 'That will do Asaf,' Dvorkin
said satisfied having checked the words of praise, which Tsevieli chose to use.
'I'd like to talk about a few more things with you, I'd like you to attend
every editorial meeting be it the political, financial departements' meetings,
and the weekly editors meeting too; as a listener and don't be tempted to offer
your opinion at this early stage.' Tsevieli was elated he
smiled warmly to Zivit as he left Dvorkin's office, though he wished to be more
reserved, to let his boss's secretary grasp that he is not interested. 'You might replace me in
about three months from now.' He said to Vered as he entered his office with a
chuckle. It's the right time to be sweet to her, to revive her disheartened
feelings, and ensure her loyalty to me. He concluded while stopping in front of
her desk, and handing her the disk-on-key. 'It's the interview with
Dvorkin's corrections, so forward it to the printing department plus the weekly
art column, I've already checked it and it has my approval.' He added with much
ado. © Haim Kadman 2014 " all rights reserved.
