The conspiracyA Story by Haim Kadmanan excerpt of the thriller THE GLOBAL THREAT.The conspiracy The global threat An excerpt Three days later on Sunday July the tenth Zarif landed incognito in
Washington Dulles International Airport, and was received by the delegation's
manager that took care of his boss luggage and safe trip to the hotel; where he
checked in and while the delegation's manager brought his boss luggage to his
boss suite, Zarif went straight to meet Rohanei. The two friends smiled warmly
to each other and shook hands, and Rohanei asked his friend the usual banal
questions, how was the flight without mentioning Zarif's stay in Damascus. He led
Zarif to his living room table and they sat down facing each other. Rohanei
pushed a written note towards Zarif and kept on the small talk describing his
boredom during the last three days. He warned Zarif in the note that his suite
was bugged but despite it they'll talk freely and let the Americans know their
plans, and he urged Zarif not to be shocked by what he will hear him say, as he
was instructed to do so by His Holy Highness. 'Listen Mohammad we're supposed to meet their president at about
three hours time, at one pm and have lunch with him and several more Americans but
just the two of us.' He cleared his throat, took a deep breath of air into his
lungs and exhaled it slowly. 'After our last cabinet meeting I was briefed by His Holy Highness
for this mission of ours, which is to persuade the American president by hidden
threats more openly compared with our last visit. The aim is the same one of
course, to force them to pull out their flotilla from our territorial waters.' 'But that subject was discussed in our last cabinet meeting too
Hassan.' Zarif reminded him. 'In general terms just in general terms, for just you and me were
sent here, to see to it in person… Well when I asked His Holy Highness what
would be our next stage, or what if the American president will laugh in our
faces? His Holy Highness answer was that we'll be informed by our ambassador if
there'll be additional instructions; as the next stages will be decided
according to developments.' Rohanei coughed twice loudly and watching Zarif's
eyes winked before resuming his monologue. 'I've had enough time to think
things over, and I'm afraid that what I'll say may shock you or at least
surprise you deeply Mohammad.' 'I trust you Hassan and I'll listen if you'll insist on revealing
your thoughts, but please give it a second thought before…' 'I've thought about it more than enough Mohammad and I'm sure I
won't regret telling it you… So we both learned at the cabinet last meeting in
which we participated that Qasem was ordered by His Holy Highness to stop all
the provocation activities, including the demonstrations in front of the
American embassy up to further instructions. Our ambassador to the US was
ordered to return to our embassy in Washington, and he flew with me, landed safely,
and serves our state's interest as usual.' 'But what the point what do you want to say Hassan?' 'I'm afraid that while we'll be negotiating with the Americans,
Qasem will attack their flotilla… But that's just one aspect although a
comprehensive one, the second aspect is our own fate. His Holy Highness doesn't
trust us and Qasem treats us as his enemies… Whether our supreme leader and
Qasem would succeed through this double cross to force the Americans to pull
out or not, we'll be arrested as traitors when we'll return. Yes Mohammad they
use us as their scapegoats… I'm going to strike a deal with the Americans while
you're free Mohammad to decide if you'll join me or do whatever you believe you
should do…' 'I don't know it's too… I don't know even how to term it Hassan. I
need time to think it over. I know how much Qasem hates us, but why do you
think that they'll arrest us why…?' The utterly shocked Zarif asked him with
beseeching eyes. 'I was ordered by our supreme leader to pretend defection, yes to
offer my services to the Americans and thus to beguile them…' 'It's incredible it's simply incredible Hassan, I know that they
don't trust us; but I must think it over and I let you know… But I'll better go
now and take a shower and change, and I'll have an answer I believe later on.' © Haim Kadman July 2014 " all rights reserved.
