Papier-mâché Songbird

Papier-mâché Songbird

A Poem by Hitchopotamus
"

Where hollow hearts sing foreign songs Of ancient dawns and painted wrongs.

"

Sweet sting’s bitter wringing.
Slighted slither, darkness singing.
Like a wounded snake he slunk
To the foot of the evergreen trunk.

She clings to him. Stabbing beguile.
He sees his songbird with her painted smile,
He saunters down the narrow street
Where lovers meet and traders greet.

The cobbled path, the regimented stone
paints a daunting tapestry of death’s foul throne.
Where hollow hearts sing foreign songs
Of ancient dawns and painted wrongs.

The day has darkened, his candle lit.
Where once hand in hand the two did sit
Now one stands, one lies, just six feet away
The candle flickers out, the man begins to sway.

The knotted limb, the tree tightens his grip.
The crows crooked grin,  he curls his lip.
Clutching for his songbird, clutching for breath,
His papier-mâché songbird didn’t answer. Only death.

The wicked winter watched with a reproachful frown
and the trees sneered unforgivingly down
At the parched limbs and wrinkled skin.
For the skeletal man retreated in.

The chink in his armour,
The sword in the stone.
The powerless playwright’s futile drama
As flesh now turns to bone.

Serendipity wavers, darkness reigns.
Moulded dreams decay, life now drained.
This love, this life seems all but feigned,
The motion subsides, the crow remains.

... Absolutely incredible... I am floored... I do not know what to say... The mannerism of your writing is pure brilliance... The rhyming, and... Well you seem to know what I would say about style... Cause just wow...

*She clings to him. Stabbing beguile.
He sees his songbird with her painted smile,
He saunters down the narrow street
Where lovers meet and traders greet.*

Utter... Brilliance...

Just incredible! I felt the cold, the pain, the loneliness. Your powerful words weaved a powerful tale of loss!
