Lily’s head was screaming with pain when she opened her eyes. The sun was breaking through the clouds and soaring in through the cracked glass. Lily was still lying where she had fallen in her room. She welcomed the sun’s rays eagerly, she felt cold all over.
A thumping pain was growing in her skull and she just wanted to yank it out. Thankfully the rain had stopped and Lily was able to stand and walk stiffly into the bathroom.
Looking in the undamaged mirror, she saw the bump on her forehead where she had obviously struck the ground. Gingerly she dabbed at the swelling bruise and stopped after stinging pain throbbed through her head.
Maybe I should go and find the First Aid kit. Clutching her head between her hands, Lily stumbled through her room and over to the door. She remembered seeing the ominous glow under the door earlier and wondered how long she had been out for.
Looking out the window, the sun’s rays were coming in at a slight angle, it was almost midday.
She grasped the door handle in her stiffened hand and winced. The door knob was completely frozen. She charged the door with her shoulder and was rewarded with a big, fat bruise on her skin. Great, another form of pain coming my way.
Though her attempt was unhelpful, the door gave a slight groan, a crack and slightly opened.
Lily pushed the door with her whole strength behind it, and was shocked when it swung open quickly after the initial push. With momentum behind her, Lily fell forwards through the air and landing with a sickening crack on the floor. That hurt a lot more than it should have.
Slowly opening her eyes, Lily looked with utter shock at the upstairs hallway. It was completely frozen! The walls, the floor, the ceiling, the top stairs, the hanging lights, everything was covered in a thin coating of ice. Slowly standing up, Lily took a step towards the stairs, slipped, fell over and skidded nearly four meters down the hall.
This, luckily, put her right in front of the stairs. Grabbing the banister for support, Lily hauled herself up from the ice – covered floor and slowly but steadily made her way down the stairs.
Upon reaching the bottom step, Lily saw the door to her father’s room ajar and the inside frozen. Holding a scream of panic in her throat, Lily pulled the door open the rest of the way. Inside the room, Lily found that not all of the room had frozen, just where the door had stood open and where the now non – existent glass wall had been. Lily noticed that there was no glass present in the room, the glass must have been ripped out rather than broken in.
Lily’s heart stopped when she saw the white piece of paper stuck to the desks chair. She crossed the room and clasped the note in her hand, eagerly ripping it from the chairs material. Her eyes scanned the writing and she broke into a sob;

Lily,
I have little time left. I have kept you ignorant all these years, knowing that you were old enough to know. Keeping you out of danger was my first priority, instead I have brought danger upon you.
Lily, They have come for me and will not leave without me. I wasn’t given a new job offer in Kenya, I found that it was there that I had to go to fight for my survival. That is where They are taking me.
My daughter, I wish that this was not the way you found out about me. Our lives will never be the same again. I ask you to look for me in Kenya. I have friends there who will help you. Please my darling, save me.
I love you with all my heart,
Dad. XXX

Her father had been taken. Lily’s heart wrenched and she gave a woeful sob. She was lost and alone.
Lily fell backwards against the wall and stumbled down the wall until she was sitting on the hard wood floor. She didn’t have the strength in her legs to keep her standing. What was her father talking about? Finding out about what? What had taken him? Her mind was going at a million miles an hour.
Lily sat on the cold floor until the light outside begun to fade. She had cried out everything she could and now sitting against the wall and staring out of the destroyed window.
When the last of the remaining light had gone, and Lily had started to shiver with cold, she struggled to her feet and wiped away the few remaining tears from her cold cheek. The frigid air had begun to settle and was cooling her to the core.
Lily, feeling sick of doing nothing, walked slowly up the stairs and into her bedroom. Stooping down, she picked up the back pack that lay discarded on the floor. Opening the zip, she picked out the phone and turned it on. The starting up tune filled the cold silence with a clatter of cheerful sounds, though Lily had no patience for cheerful music.
Lily dialled her father’s number and waited for the dialling tone to start. When the familiar ringing started in her ear, downstairs she heard the familiar Nokia tune coming from her father’s room. He had had no time to grab his phone.
Lily fell into despair and started to cry again. Fumbling around on the floor, Lily found the navy blue hoodie that she had tied around her earlier in the day. She threw the hoodie over her head and felt the instant warmth it brought with it. Her head felt clearer already.
Lily noticed there was a gnawing pain in her stomach, then realised that she hadn’t eaten since breakfast that morning. Standing up, she stretched her aching muscles and headed for the door.
Walking through the frozen hallway for the third time had made her used to the slippery surfaces, she hardly slid this time. The stairs she took one at a time and slowly as she possibly could without getting annoyed at herself. Lily walked along the downstairs hallway feeling shut in and alone. Scared, she closed her father’s bedroom door as she passed it, wanting to keep the memories inside.
Passing through the lounge room was easy going, the ice hadn’t made it into the room, but the sofa and other furniture were completely sodden by the torrential rain.
In the kitchen, Lily searched through the fridge and found nothing that she had the appetite for. Moving to the pantry she found some bread and jam. Looks like I’m having jam on toast for dinner. She thought
Lily removed the toaster from the cupboard above the sink and placed three slices of bread in. Whilst the bread was crisping, Lily’s mind was reeling of the possibility that she was going to have to go to Africa. The sudden ping of the toaster shocked Lily back to reality. The toast was hot and crunchy, just the way she liked it.
Sitting down, Lily ate half a slice of her toast before she felt her hunger was swallowed and she lost her appetite. How could she be eating at a time like this?
Fatigue dawned on Lily and she felt the need for sleep. Knowing that she wasn’t helping anyone in her present state, Lily discarded her toast in the trash and walked the long haul back to her room, where she collapsed onto the bed and fell into an instant bliss.

Lily awoke to the dawning light of a new day. The birds were chirping and the suns warmth slowly ebbed its way towards her bed from the broken window. Lily felt annoyed at herself for sleeping for so long. He father had been taken and she had just stayed here and slept.
Lily yanked the back pack off the foot of the bed and raced down the hallways and to the front door. The ice had begun to melt and was finding ways out of the house. Lily opened the front door and walked down the paved footpath to the garage. Praying that the family car was alright, Lily opened the garage door and walked in.
The garage had managed to stay clean and dry, which was a shock to Lily.
She walked to the driver’s side of the car and unlocked the door. Lily threw herself into the driver’s seat and chucked her back pack onto the passenger seat.
The Lancer was not meant to be driven by her unless her father was present and her plates were displayed, though the trip this morning was more important than obeying road rules.
Starting the car was easy, driving it wasn’t so. Lily reversed slowly out of the garage, hoping to only scrape the paint off the side of the car if she was to hit anything, though she managed to make it onto the road without killing anything or anyone.
She pushed the car into gear and edged slowly down the long stretch of road leading down into the city. Lily focused throughout the journey to the bottom of the mountain side but gave up on trying once she hit the city.
Lily parked the car in an abandoned parking lot just to the side of the road and hoped out. She felt horrible leaving the car there, but the trip down from the house would have otherwise been too long for comfort.
Lily walked along the familiar city streets until she found a bus stop. Studying the timetable, Lily found a bus route that stopped here in fifteen minutes that would take her to the Hong Kong ferry wharf.
Lily sat on the bench and looked out at the early morning view of the ocean, smog clouded around her vision, but she couldn’t care. She was going to miss Hong Kong.
The fifteen minutes seemed to drag on forever, and with no one walking the streets at this hour, time seemed to go especially slow.
The small transporter bus arrived slowly and stoped to pick her up. Lily sat in the front seat and gazed at the scenery as it went slowly by, her head bobbing up and down in the buses bumpy ride.

The familiar smell of salt hit Lily in the face the moment she hoped off the bus. The taste of the ocean hung on her tongue with ever breath she took. Lily thanked the bus driver and started towards the wharf directly in front of her.
Lily soon came to the Hong Kong ferry wharf and asked the larger driver when he was next going across the way.
“Erm, I don’t leave for another half hour.”
“Oh ok. Do you mind if I just sit on your Ferry to wait?”
“Sure, why not.” He smiled
Lily crossed the small way between the wharf and the ferry. She paid the driver and found a seat near the back.
