The Watering Hole

The Watering Hole

A repost about being thirsty...(everything is a repost at this point.)

The Watering Hole

One hundred and fifty miles

The pads of my feet ache heat

My head caught between the gloves of boxing kangaroos

Thoughts mixing with death and visions of grandeur

My throat reverberates, drying mucous tissue

Breathing with a dusty click

Skin baked with an uneven glow

Eyes scritch scratched with particles of blowing sand

I will reach it by sundown

I can smell the wetness that has long since been but hint

Now it enters in rolling ocean waves

Promising, enchanted, sweet swallows

I long for the fairytale gulp, the gut busting fullness

I will keep drinking until sick with extended belly

The water, the lure and the staple

Keeping the hyenas at bay

But the real reason for the journey

The chance at unorthodox companionship

In the light of overwhelming need, thirst… no loneliness

If only for the briefest respite

Thanks a lot.. now my throat is parched too! ;) This is really good. You really described extreme thirst so well it really does make your reader long for a drink! I like the way you threw the emotion in there with the last stanza by suggesting that not only are you looking for physical sustenance but emotional sustenance, companionship, as well. We need that as much as we need nourishment. Nice work.
