The Watering Hole

The Watering Hole

One hundred and fifty miles

The pads of my feet ache heat

My head caught between the gloves of boxing kangaroos

Thoughts mixing with death and visions of grandeur

My throat reverberates, drying mucous tissue

Breathing with a dusty click

Skin baked with an uneven glow

Eyes scritch scratched with particles of blowing sand

I will reach it by sundown

I can smell the wetness that has long since been but hint

Now it enters in rolling ocean waves

Promising, enchanted, sweet swallows

I long for the fairytale gulp, the gut busting fullness

I will keep drinking until sick with extended belly

The water, the lure and the staple

Keeping the hyenas at bay

But the real reason for the journey

The chance at unorthodox companionship

In the light of overwhelming need, thirst… no loneliness

If only for the briefest respite

This reminds me of the movies I watched about cowboys lost in the badlands of...yeah...Arizona....being tracked by Indians who seem to have a secret supply of water. He thirsts. The awful moment arrives when his horse collapses under him; he staggers on towards a distant mirage, then falls. (No hyenas though :)
So I'm deep in this vision, when you drop the lines:
But the real reason for the journey
The chance at unorthodox companionship
In the light of overwhelming need, thirst...
And it all makes perfect sense.

I like the last stanza in particular here..A traveler indeed never understands what drives him on and on..the thirst for knowing more never ends.

My fave:
"My head caught between the gloves of boxing kangaroos
Thoughts mixing with death and visions of grandeur"

This reminds of the old soda ad, with a guy wandering the desert looking for water. Very appropriate as summer approaches.

I don't think they serve water at any of the ponds I frequent...
I've limited my drnking now though to days that end in a Y urp!

"But the real reason for the journey

Hey, this place is my watering hole... open 24/7 with only a two poem minimum.

Thy name is wordaholic, and I'm addicted to life...

Great write here my friend!

I am thirsty actually. I often think about water this way, in much the same way that I would shut my eyes as a little kid and wonder what it would be like to be blind ... that is to say, to truly put into practice the notion of "you don't know what you got till it's gone." That very lofty metaphorical sense of roaming over deserts but knowing what that feels like the first time you feel thirsty. Full of amazing imagery and visceral sense, this piece does justice to the absence of, and the desire for, the elemental and essential.
