The Day The Music Died

The Day The Music Died

A Poem by Crowley

Written a prompt of the painting by Dunkees. The painting is of the same title.

I turned up the heat
Turned down the beat
Not knowing what happened
Exactly

Trying and succeeding
Unlike rolling and flowing
Can’t be preferable
Exhausting

As my whims took over my sense of pride
The melody of my life shifted, melting
Lovely pieces of soft, globular gunk
A running river of rhythm out of sync

Seeing the devastation, burned sheet music
I pulled out my pen and threw you a bass
You counted it down and I wrote
About the day the music died

The day the music died. Thinking about the members of the 27 club and their legacy. They sure burned bright before they were snuffed out. Just imagine what they could have gone on to do if they had lived. You have me remembering Amy today in particular.

A running river out of sync

What a great line that is Crowley. Now I will go check the painting out. Amazing how paintings can inspire. All the best.

I loved the metaphors that you used to describe how you feel about music. My favorite line of the poem was "A running river of rhythm out of sync" It took it as you feel out of touch with the music of current day and it doesn't speak to you the same way. I enjoyed reading this.

Thank you so much. I appreciate the kind words!
your gentled hum has been haunting my memories for months now...I've lost my melody and sacrificed my mind ... I woke up only yesterday to find myself standing in a field of poppies....I've missed it my friend and the mad lil icon is pointing at me....I'll do better I promise!

I like to haunt! I have missed you as well and was super happy to see fresh writing Q!!
The day the music died. The 27 club is an elite group. Love the musicality you've orchestrated for our enjoyment. Good to see you, my friend. Happy of the happiest New Years!

Yes, ‘Heaven has a helluva band’….and the music is alive there still…So we should all save our tickets for entrance to that show Crowley! This toe-tapping musical poem hits all the right sweetspots. Great verses, rhythm, musicality, reference to ‘that day’ in music, artwork…as always my friend- You Rock!!

Thanks APH!!
this took me back to Feb. 3, 1959.

I was crushed...I loved Buddy's music, had his early singles....Oh Boy, Not Fade Away...
others...and I had seen Ritchie Valens singing Donna on the Ed Sullivan pretty close to the time of the crash.
but the 27 club has been so painful for music lovers...all those great ones dead at the same age.
Burned sheet music, devastation...the wreckage.

So true..so much good music lost, but makes what was left over that much more amazing. Thanks Jacob!
Was that when we started singing, Bye-bye, Miss American Pie? So much of the music has died...Hendrix, Joplin, Stevie Ray, Jeff Healey...so much great talent just gone forever. It doesn't matter the genre. I could go the same route with country, pop, rock, jazz or blues. I cried when I heard of Jeff Healey's death, mainly because he had been through so much in this life already and had done nothing to merit that suffering. An orphan, he suffered with cancer from before the age of one and survived until the cancer took him at just about forty. But what a talent! He's the only picker I ever saw stand toe to toe with Stevie Ray and not only hold his own but steal the show. There's a video on YouTube of him and Ray live doing "Look at Little Sister". If you watch that you'll see what I mean. I love the great guitarists. Keeping the music alive on my end, still picking and writing every day. I enjoyed the read. F.
