My Town

My Town

A Poem by Crowley
"

A little tibute...

"

This was inspired by the Stephen Morath painting "Sunset Ride" and the Wall of Voodoo song Mexican Radio with a small nod to the Authority Zero version of the song thrown in cuz their remake was boss.

"I feel a hot wind from the border…
And a touch of a world that is older…"

Sunset makes quick work of slowly developing friendships

This old truck is made for sitting close

Rumbles down the hard pan main drag

You put your head on my shoulder and yawn

"I hear the talking of the DJ…..
Can’t understand just what does he say…"

The picture show starts as the sun sets

The clouds hectic, windblown patterns, yellow and beautiful

The movie we have seen a hundred times

The bar we visited a thousand times….the bar it is

I wish I was in Tijuana…"
Eating barbecued iguana…..(sipping f*****g ice cold Caguama)"

The burgers drip, drip, dripping grease and cheese

Cigarette in one hand, papas fritas in the other

You ask if we can have pie, I say “to go”

You tip too little; I wait until you’re gone and add five

"I’m on a Mexican radio…
I’m on a Mexican, whoa-oh, radio…"

I see Julio sweeping his front stoop briskly

He sees and calls us to join him for brandy

“I have pie” I shout, and raise the bag high, she sighs

She takes the truck and heads out, I will walk

Tomorrow will come hard

What a lovely scene, you are a very familiar creature Mr. Crowley as such i feel a generosity of being that reaches into your printed page and permeates to your readers authentic. The cadence and (i have noticed this early on, in you) clicks very quickly as i read your share, leaving us feeling a little jealous of the scenes left to play out as she and we drive away in the truck.

Yes.. you can feel it.. the rhythm of the day.. the hot sun sunset... the music creating a sweet, soft atmosphere. That delicious day just seems perfect, even in the melancholy tones of the night coming on.

I do like the above lines. I could use a tropical vacation. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry. I did like this one.

This is charming & fun & original & definitely one of my favorites of yours! I love all the shifts in tempo & perspective. Vivid palpable details that jumpstart the nostalgia. I can't even come up with words right now, I'm tongue-tied, just like it might've felt crammed into one of those classic old rides like in your artwork, which I also love! I can feel this scene with all my senses! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Haha. Wall of voodoo? That's an inspiration I never thought anyone would ever mention. I remember when the lead singer recorded a song with Stewart Copeland for the soundtrack for Rumble Fish called Dont Box Me In. That's a killer song.
I think you did the painting justice. To me it looks like something that would hang in a Taco Bueno. I love Taco Bueno so that's a compliment. Your poem takes us on a vivid avant garde journey next to the border. I can smell the cigarette smoke and old refried bean lard. The ending feels like a bad decision, but who in their right mind would turn down brandy and pie. Good poem, man

I can feel the heat of the scene from way over here...musing out my aura...bringing my tequila ....making me want to do a sweaty dance in the heat of the night...marked with all the illusions of a siesta. Grabbin' my poncho to sit on the corner and take it all in....Have you seen my sombrero amigo?

I'm not acquainted with the artists you attribute inspiration to, but your writing doesn't rely on that knowledge. This is a great stand alone piece. TONS of atmosphere sculpted here. And I'm suddenly hungry for BBQ iguana and pie... the last three stanza are killer. Yeah, tomorrow does come hard. And then we can get more pie and iguana....

Thanks...I am a big fan of Mexico and the painting reminded me of those visits.
