Appetizer

Appetizer

A Poem by Jay Ryan
"

My boyfriend dumped me after i showed him this.

"
We’re sitting at a s****y Sunday morning brunch table, talking about our lives; scrabbling to think of something exciting to tell one another. The waitress comes over and politely asks us what we would like to eat today, I ask for a pancake house special with strawberrys on the side and you ask for the number 3 combo.

The waitress leaves and were left in an uncomfortable silence, trying to think of something or anything to blurt out until I finally do. A question that has been on my mind for awhile now.

“What are you hungry for?” He seems confused that I’d ask, he knows We’d already discussed what he is getting for brunch, but he tells me again. “Number 3 combo, 2 eggs, bacon and toast.” I manage a small laugh under my breath, he obviously has no clue what I meant.

“What are you hungry for? What are you looking to get out of me? Do you need a friend or money? Are you simply lonely? What will happen next Friday night when you stumble home and I notice your not wearing any ring? Are you still hungry for me? Have I gave you an upset stomach? Did you have enough? Did you take enough?”

You stare at me for a few minutes, taking in what I had already took in for the last few months. The waitress comes over and places both hot plates infront of us and tells us to enjoy. You wait until she is gone, so you can get up without a scene.
You look at me blank faced, with the same blue eyes I have always been in love with and you told me, “I am full."
