Religion vs. Humanism

I have oft wondered into the arms of Religion

Of course I have also walked the path of humanism

I have a general discomfort in the division I am finding

As a woman, as a person, as a human in this world

I will defend that which I firmly believe

Despite my culture, my faith, my doctrine

I will choose the side of humanity without second glance

So why, when someone is emersed in radical doctrine

Can he not, will he not defend the humans around him

I do not argue Hitler because he killed Jews

I argue Hitler because he killed man

He made a mockery of Divine gift

He played God as a mortal and delt death where he had no right

I hear the cause of Muslim exetremism and I am enraged

Not as a person of faith but as a person with humanity

Who is to say, because you bare the guise of a different faith

That you are condemned to hell

That you will not recieve your 40 virgins

That if you will not submit, convert you will be swiftly cut down

Hitchens states: I will fight the side of humanism

An atheist shoulder to shoulder with the Irish Catholics

Not because he is Catholic but because it is a worthy cause

 

I must love an athiest one day

For I will seem to better understand humanism

Perhaps with this

They well better understand faith for the sake of faith

Rather than faith for the sake of extremism

We seem kindred spirits of sorts. I’m always amazed at the extremists in religion, the divisions between the sexes or our races. All these divisions and the quickness to characterize groups by poor behaviors of individuals kept us safe as animals but harms our society. Great work.

I love people who think this way. I've always tried to figure why it is that religion seems to bring people together by tearing others apart. And you're right, atheism is the most human of religions.

Religion has caused more death and caused more wars. Here in the USA we have a few problems. But overall we live together in peace. Being kind and respecting human life would be the way to go. Real war should be hunger and sickness. 1 million will died of starvation monthly in Africa. 1.2 million will died of HIV. Your poem is powerful and ask some wise questions. I don't understand the world leaders don't do the right things. A outstanding poem.
