For The Peace Of The Child

For The Peace Of The Child

A Poem by Soul Cemetery

In a land nearby,

Not that long ago.

A little girl lost ran barefoot

through the snow.

The sadness she’d seen in her short life

Led her to search for a place without strife.

She ran and she ran

Until she came to a glen,

Where fairies and nymphs did dwell amongst men.

There she fell down with trembling fear

For she didn’t know where she had come.

Or how near,

She was to salvation

From the terrible world

That cursed her

And hurt her

From the day she was burnt.

The nymph did appear and stood looking down

At the sorrowful girl alone on the ground.

She lifted her head and wiped away tears

From eyes that were way too old for her years.

“What do you wish for in this world that’s so dark?

Tell me your dreams you hold dear in your heart”

And the little girl said in a wistful way

“I long to be safe through the night and the day.

I no longer want to hear the raising of voices,

See the raising of fists and feel those terrible vices”

“I want to be free where the butterflies play

on the gentlest of zephyrs

in a land far away.

Where unicorns roam in the veil of the night.

The silvery moon reflecting their eyes.

Their hooves gallop softly through violets in bloom.

Over rolling green hills leading to soft golden dunes.

Where rabbits and foxes live together as friends.

Frolicking down hills, through rivers and glens.

Where birds sing softly in a cloudless sky

And when night falls gently

It comes from on high.

So the darkness it settles peaceful and still.

With stars bright and clear

In a galaxy fulfilled.

That’s what I wish for” the little girl cried.

“To be safe all the while.

Never having to hide

From the cruelty in this visualistic world.

To be a young, free, accepted and happy girl.”

The Nymph saw what was wanted

And she knew it was true.

So she spoke to the girl, “ I can grant this for you

But if I give you this freedom,

A part of you remains here.

To remind civilisation of what is just and what’s dear.”

“I can grant you your happiness.

But be sure there is no other way,

For there is no coming back

In your new land you will stay”

And the little girl whispered, “I’ll do what you ask. Please give me the happiness and peace, which will last.

Let me leave behind the world that judges and stares.

Just because of my scars they think I don’t care.

I am no different from anyone else in this town

But all they see is difference to beat down.”

So the Nymph closed her eyes and held the waif near.

Whispered the words the child needed to hear.

She entered the land that held all her dreams.

Promising a life so calm and serene.

And back in our world full of cruelty and hate.

Stands a beautiful statue beside an old fairy gate.
