First Impressions

First Impressions

A Poem by Heather Corti
"

Many, many people fall victim to the preconceived prejudices others impose upon us prior to taking the time to know us. I wrote this as a way to rail against such prejudice.

"

You think you know me

because of the gossip?

You think you know me

because of the way I look?

You think you know me

because of the car I drive?

You think you know me

because of what my husband does, or doesn’t do?

Take the time to know me

see what makes me smile

Take the time to know me

see what makes me cry

Take the time to know me

see me sitting alone

Take the time to know me

you just might like what you see

                                     Put aside your prejudices

Show me some civility

             Put aside what you hear

Show me some kindness

Put aside your fears of “my type”

Show me YOUR smile

  Put out your hand

Show me how nice YOU can be

Get to know me

just take the time

Get to know me

I can be a lot of fun

Get to know me

because you’re not afraid

Get to know me

we just might get along . . .
