The Park BenchA Poem by Hiram ClaudioA look back through lifeHe sat on the same old park bench for this was his regular way Watching the changing leaves fall as he did most every day Children were running and playing, he could hear them laughing nearby As their moms stood guard among them, keeping a keen close eye It was a scene he deeply cherished, one normal for this time of year The warm colors and brisk chill told him autumn was finally here This season stood apart for him, he felt it was the best one of all For it held deep and fond memories, so many so easy to recall He remembered early school days, and times out playing with friends Oh the joy of carefree moments, it was like they’d never ever end He thought of being home with his parents and two younger brothers as well A loving family, a simple home, a memory that made his heart swell Then he pondered that December walk years ago one day late after school When he escorted a special young lady home, an encounter that would become fuel For from there grew more moments, laughter, and talks about life He didn’t know it just then, that he would one day call her his wife Sitting alone on that park bench, he began to move slowly through the years Recalling the many challenges, grateful for the many victories over fear Raising a family, making their way, day by day building a home The many mistakes made, many lessons learned, the many obstacles overcome They had their share of struggles and heartaches, they were no strangers to pain But they remained truly committed no matter how fierce or intense the rain For surely life had its moments, many filled with roses so sweet But often those roses had thorns, bringing new challenges to meet They knew of times of abundance, they also understand deep lack They enjoyed many days of vast sunshine, they also endured nights extremely black But through it all they knew Jesus and of His great power to provide A steady and stable presence, a sure and safe place to abide As he watched the children play, thinking of all in life he’d been through He thanked his Precious Savior for being the love that was always so true He quietly prayed for each child, asking the Master to bless all their days And that they would know God profoundly and closely follow all of His ways So many things passed through his mind, so many images crossed his heart He thought of all the days he’d seen, all stamped with grace’s clear mark He rose to leave his favorite bench, for this day would soon have to cease And he prayed once more, for the little ones, that in Jesus they would always find peace © 2012 Hiram Claudio |
