My Sister's Mask

My Sister's Mask

A Poem by Rachael Hayes

My sister looked me dead in the eye
Are you ready for the death machine?
5 cinnamon bears stacked on top of one another
While continuing to look straight at me
My sister unhinges her jaw
My sister has many animalistic traits and this had to be the most disturbing
In one unnatural motion she decapitated all 5 bears
Then as if it the tunnel of death she had created with her mouth was the most mondane thing she had done all week my sister turns her face to stare blankly out the window
I watch her
She begins rearranging the headless cinnamon victims into conjoined cinnamon twins
My sister is Sid
Toy story got it wrong giving such destruction to a boy character
Because my sister is far more dangerous
Once while I stood on our kitchen
My sister walks towards me kicks over the trash and moves on to the dining room
She proceeds to gasp and exclaim
"Rachael just knocked over the can"
It took exactly 7 minutes to convince my mother otherwise
My sister skinned raccoons for fun when she was 9
For her rearranging talking toys is child's play
My sister can go from calm to rabies infested possum in the time it takes you to turn your back
My sister makes Sid look weak
She has too much spirit for one body to contain
She turned revenge into an Olympic sport
My sister has mastered the balance of beauty and fire
Although she would never admit it
My sister has this dark mystery
Laid perfectly on top of all
Her insecurities
