A Time to Forgive

A Time to Forgive

A Poem by Rachael Hayes

When you find yourself
Suffering crush syndrome
From all the things
You have chosen
To carry with you.
When you are ready
To smile at strangers
For the first time in years.
When you can no longer
Sleep
Due to your own
Reprehensible behavior
Stalking you in your
Dreams.
Accept
That not all your decisions
Were pure of heart.
You are no longer
Recognizable.
You broke someone
Too.
Water will forever
Overpower
The angriest of flames.
Inner peace takes time.
The first step?
Forgive yourself.
Next attempt to
Realign the stars.
After all you were the
One who threw
The cosmos out
Of balance in the
First place.
Your errors take time
To repair.
Give them breathing room.
Do not ask for anything
When you apologize.
Not even for forgiveness.
You are doing this for you.
You are doing it for them.
You are not doing it to
Rebuild smoldering bridges.
Say all that you must.
Do not let them blame
A third party on your behalf.
Own up to your
Short comings.
You do not want to
Be remembered that way.
Do not let past fury
Scorch crystallized memories.
Do not take their
Returned apologies
Become an excuse.
You are in control
Of how you react
And that is all you'll ever
Be in control of.
Finally
Do not try to include them
Any farther I'm your life.
Their time
Your mistakes
Are now effectively
The past.
Find balance.
Remember to breathe.
And always keep
Moving.
