Real

Real

A Poem by Rachael Hayes

I will ask  you
To hold my hand in public
Even though
I've been taught my whole life
To hide my feelings
Trained in the art of private thoughts
When I think of the future version of myself
I do not see anyone standing beside me
But please
Whisper I love yous into my collar bone
I want your voice to fuse with my skeleton
I crave to find understanding as warm
As the felt I have learned to make vessels out of
Carry me like a ship on its way to the motherland
Bring me to stand tall facing the monsoon season
Teach me the importance of defiance
But never let me turn my back on us
I want to feel this love in its rawest form
I want there to be something left
To grasp on to
Strip yourself of all senses
All beauty
Just two souls wanting more
More than a life lived in perceived realities
To connect on a deep rooted level
And not the kind of connecting that requires moans
A connection
That demands you treat it with respect
And never dare walk away
A connection
That can defy the laws of physics
No matter the heartache
An undeniable cosmic draw
Give me the real
