![]() Life On The Squad (Part 5)A Story by Terri
Bewildered, I walked into the office. There, sitting by its-self, was my squad uniform. Everything standard was there, besides the badge. Stupid laws.
I changed and deposited my regular clothes in my duffle that I found under the desk. John and Roy would soon be called out. I rested the strap on my shoulder then headed out. On my way to the break room, I said a hurried thanks to Dix. Life was beginning to feel normal again; like I had pulled back into the fast lane.
“Squad 51, are you available?” I heard the radio as I walked in. Roy and Johnny turned to face me.
“L.A., send 68 out. We currently have a problem.” Roy spoke slowly into the radio.
“Kara!” Johnny nearly screamed. “What are you thinking?!”
Dr. Brackett moved beside me. “Dix and I think she needs to be in the field with you, not cooped up in some hospital.”
“Seriously Johnny. Not my idea.” I hoped my face was sincere.
John didn’t seem to hear me. “Are you all insane?” I didn’t hear the last art because I was listening to Cap say the engine was en route to Rampart. They’ll let me come, I thought. They’ll talk Johnny to his senses. I hope.
If mike used the sirens, then they’d be here in five minutes. If they didn’t, then it could take ten. I decided to wait out the fight, so I sat on the couch and stared out the window.
Don’t get me wrong. The research building can be pretty cool; but when you’ve already looked at it for three hours, it gets pretty boring.
John and Kal were still relentlessly fighting when Dix walked in with the rest of the station.
“What in Sam's hill is going on here?” Cap asked
“Most everyone here says that Kara needs to be out on the squad, not here.” Brackett said. “But Johnny disagrees.”
Dix turned to tell Johnny off, but then Ann walked in “Hi John.” You see, Miss Anti-Nickname has a problem. I guess I should tell you know, Johnny has asked out almost every single nurse at Rampart and none have worked out well. The only nurse he avoids like a plague is Ann. It is actually ironic, because Ann really likes Johnny.
“Hi, Ann.” Jonny said before he got back into the argument.
“Johnny, Kara should go.” Dix was saying.
“I agree, John.” Ann cut in. “She doesn’t seem seem sick to me.” We all stared at her like she was an idiot, which she is.
It was this silence that made me realize two things: 1. Roy had joined me on the couch and 2. Johnny was turning red.
I got up and std in from of my uncle. “Johnny, if it makes you that upset, I’ll stay here. I can go upstairs and visit Maggie.”
“Kara, I believe that Margaret is sleeping.” Ann said.
“She has a family, right?” Normally, this would have set her off. But Ann was posing as a kid-friendly catch for Johnny. Little did she know that everyone in the hospital reported every detail to Johnny. If Johnny was ever stupid enough to marry her, it wouldn’t take her long to ship me off to military school.
Johnny seemed to be studying my face. “Alright, Kara.” He said. “You can come.” Knowing Johnny, I either had a face of hope, disappointment, or most likely, a mix of the two.
“Really?!” Now I was way beyond sugar, or even drug, induced eagerness.
“Yes. But we are all going to have to keep our eyes peeled.”
“I don’t think he’s all that dangerous, Johnny.”
He just stared for a few seconds. “Are you nuts! He pointed a gun at you!”
“But never pulled the trigger.” I pointed out.
“Because you weren’t a threat”
“I’m still not.”
“You could tell the police what he planned to do.”
